Navigating Easter Treats Mindfully

Navigating Easter Treats Mindfully

Easter arrives with joy, colour, and baskets full of excitement- some of it wrapped in foil. We don't believe in banning treats; the key is to enjoy them wisely.

1. Create a “treat window”

Allow sweets with meals as a pudding instead of grazing throughout the day. This reduces the number of acid attacks on enamel.

2. Sweet, juicy fruits instead of sticky sugar

Think berries and fresh fruit rather than gummies, sticky chews, or long-lasting lollipops that linger too long.

3. A pause before brushing

It can be tempting to brush right after sweet treats- even naturally sweet foods like fruit- but it’s best to wait. Sugar and acids temporarily soften enamel, and brushing too soon can increase the risk of damage. Waiting at least 30 minutes allows saliva to neutralise acids and start remineralising enamel.

Remember, dentists recommend brushing twice a day only. Brushing more often can be abrasive on teeth and gums, so keeping to a morning and bedtime routine is both safe and effective.

4. Balance the sweetness

Encourage drinking cow’s milk or eating cheese after a sweet treat to help stimulate saliva and neutralise the acids left behind in the mouth after the sweet treats.

5. Make brushing part of the celebration

Encourage them to let their toothbrush “chase away the Easter sugar bugs.” It becomes a playful transition rather than a chore after festivities.

6. Curate a more magical basket

Stickers, bubbles, chalks, jump ropes, crayons, trinkets, small toys, colouring books make Easter just as magical without adding to the sugar overload.
