Teething Explained: Science-Backed Tips for Parents

The red cheeks. The drool. The 2am waking. If you are in the thick of teething, we see you. We have been there with our own little ones, and we have supported hundreds of parents through it in our clinics.

Teething is a physiological process where the tooth breaks through the gum tissue. Scientifically, this induces a localised inflammatory response. That inflammation is what causes the pain, the swelling, and yes, the irritability.

However, there is a lot of misinformation out there. Let's break down the science of teething and how to manage it safely.

When Does it Start?

Typically, the first tooth (usually the lower central incisor) arrives around 6 months, though anywhere from 4 to 12 months is considered normal. The process continues in waves until around age 2.5–3, when the second molars (the big ones at the back) finally make their appearance.

The Symptoms: What's Normal?

Yes: Excess dribbling, chewing on fingers/objects, swollen gums, fussiness, and mild temperature elevation.

No: High fever (over 38°C), diarrhoea, or systemic illness. Please do not assume high fevers are "just teething" and always consult your GP if concerned.

Science-Backed Management Strategies

1. Mechanical Pressure

The most effective relief is often simple counter-pressure. Chewing on something firm helps to numb the sore area and assists the tooth in cutting through. This is why babies gnaw on crib rails and your fingers!

2. Cold Therapy

Cold acts as a natural anaesthetic by constricting blood vessels and reducing inflammation. A clean, chilled (not frozen) teething ring or a cold damp flannel can work wonders.

3. Sonic Vibration (The Secret Weapon)

This is a lesser-known tip that we swear by. Gentle vibration can increase blood flow and act as a distraction from the pain signals being sent to the brain. It functions similarly to rubbing a bumped elbow. The sensation of vibration overrides the sensation of pain.

How Brushi Bear™ Helps Teething

When we designed Brushi Bear™, we didn't just want a toothbrush for cleaning teeth; we wanted a tool for the whole 0–4 journey. That includes the painful teething months.

The Mellow Mode: Brushi Bear™ features two settings. The 'Mellow' mode is a lower frequency vibration designed specifically for sensitive gums. When a new tooth is pushing through, the vibration massages the gum tissue, providing relief without the abrasion of manual scrubbing.

The Double-Sided Head: Even when a baby is teething, oral hygiene must continue. Our double-sided head allows you to clean the new tooth whilst simultaneously massaging the opposing gum, killing two birds with one stone (or one bear!).

Teething is a phase, and like all phases, it will pass. Until then, plenty of cuddles, cold teethers, and gentle vibration are your best friends.

Soothe sore gums whilst you clean.
