Creating a Calm Bedtime

Adding Brushing to Your Wind-Down Ritual
Start With a Slow Transition
Instead of moving straight from playtime to bedtime, create a small buffer. Try dimming the lights, turning on gentle music, or starting a “quiet time activity” like reading together. When children ease into calmness instead of being rushed, each step, including brushing, flows much more smoothly.
Make Brushing Predictable
Little ones find comfort in knowing what comes next.
Try a simple sequence like:
- Bath or wash
- Pyjamas
- Brush teeth
- Story
- Snuggles and sleep
Placing brushing just after pyjamas helps anchor it as a non-negotiable part of “getting cosy” for the night.
Use Sensory Cues to Set the Mood
A warm-lit bathroom or soft music can make the experience soothing instead of stimulating. Invite your child to take slow breaths, notice the foam, or giggle at the minty bubbles, it keeps the moment light while still calm.
Turn Brushing Into Connection Time
Make brushing feel like something you do together rather than something done to your child. Try:
- Brushing alongside them
- Taking turns (“You brush, then mummy brushes!”)
- Let them hold or even brush the teeth of their favourite toy for comfort
These mini interactions help children relax and feel supported.
End With a Night-Time Phrase
Create a special bedtime line that signals they’ve completed the routine:
- “Fresh teeth, sweet dreams!”
- “Sparkly smile, time to sleep awhile.”
- Consistency + calm cues = smoother bedtimes and happier brushing habits.
